Ingredient notes & substitutions
Soda water can be substituted for another type of sparkling water - unflavored or with lemon or lime flavor
Soda water can also be swapped for a lemon/lime soda for a sweeter version
Lime needs to be fresh - lime juice in a bottle just won't do. But, you can switch it for lemon with some change to the flavor.
Crushed ice can be substituted for whole ice cubes, or omitted
Fresh mint - only use the leaves, as the stem can make it bitter
Tips & tricks
If you don't have a muddler - use the handle of a wooden spoon instead
Don't muddle too much as the mint leaves can turn bitter if they're too crushed - which is why I squeeze the lime a bit first
Make it sweeter by swapping soda water for lemon/lime soda or adding sugar while muddling the lime and mint
Make it a cocktail by adding a shot of rum (for a classic Mojito), vodka or bourbon together with the crushed ice
If you don't have an ice crusher, crush ice cubes by placing them in a sealed plastic bag inside a clean kitchen towel, and then use a wooden spoon as a hammer to crush the ice.
