There are restaurant chains, and then there are... over rated restaurant chains. While we've all tried KFC and McDonald's, we also know that they're not all that. Fast food, yes. Great food? Definitely not. But other chains have a reputation as being better, be it due to a cozier dining experience or better food. And some, like Shake Shack, do live up to their reputation, at least if you ask me. Others? Not so much...
I was curious what other foodies thought of these popular and somewhat hyped-up food chains, so I took to the internet foodie forums, and here I gathered the results for you. Read on to find out which restaurant chains foodies believe are the most over rated of the bunch!!
Cheesecake Factory
The Cheesecake Factory is known both for its extensive menu and decadent cheesecakes. However, as is often the case, a vast menu can compromise the overall quality and freshness of dishes. Regardless of their views on the food, however, most foodies seem to agree that the cheesecake is some of the best you can find!
In-N-Out
In-N-Out is a beloved West Coast fast-food chain known for its simple yet utterly satisfying burgers. While many swear by its quality, others say that it's mostly hype, and suggest trying other burger options instead. One foodie who tried it to see for himself says: "'Better than McDonalds' is about the best I can rate it, which isn't saying much." No, for sure, "better than McDonald's" is the bare minimum!
Dave & Buster's
Dave & Buster's is a popular chain known for combining dining with entertainment, but not everyone likes it. Some argue that while the games and atmosphere are fun, the food can be hit or miss. Additionally, both food and games are seen as quite expensive compared to what one might expect for the overall experience. For these reasons, many foodies deem Dave & Buster's overrated.
Panera
Panera is known for its soups, sandwiches, and salads, and offering a lot of healthy options compared to other chains. However, some foodies consider the prices to be relatively high for the portion sizes and quality offered. As one foodie puts it: "Food is good at best and you pay a lot for super small portions."
Buffalo Wild Wings
Buffalo Wild Wings is famous for its wings and its sports bar atmosphere. Some wing lovers argue that there are better wing joints out there, and the overall experience doesn't justify the high prices. Multiple foodies have noticed a sharp decline in quality in recent years, while at the same time, prices have gone up.
Olive Garden
Olive Garden is a popular Italian-American restaurant chain with a loyal following. These regulars will choose this restaurant for a "fancy" night out, but many foodies don't like its Americanized version of Italian food, and say the quality and ambience may not match the prices. Instead, they recommend going to a "real" Italian restaurant, where the prices might be the same, but the food much better and more authentic!
Taco Bell
Taco Bell is famous for its affordable Tex-Mex-inspired fast food. Critical foodies argue that while it's quite cheap, the quality does not align with the brand's popularity. One foodie says: "Taco Bell is somehow the most overrated and underrated franchise of all time" and another commenter succinctly states that: "The key to Taco Bell is to not think of it as Mexican Food, but as Taco Bell, and then it gets a lot better."
I couldn't agree more! There's Mexican, and there's Tex-Mex. And then there's Taco Bell. I love them all (almost) equally, but they're not at all the same.
Chipotle
Chipotle is praised for its "food with integrity" approach and customizable burritos and bowls. However, some diners feel that the hype around its commitment to sustainability may not always translate into great taste or value. One foodie comments that he really enjoyed their food when they started out, but that the quality has since declined.
Five Guys
Five Guys is a burger chain known for its fresh ingredients and customizable toppings. While many foodies like their burgers, others find it overrated and overpriced compared to other options.
Chick-Fil-A
Chick-Fil-A is celebrated for its chicken sandwiches and customer service. However, its controversial stance on social issues has led to boycotts and criticism from parts of the population, and now some foodies have found that the chicken sandwiches are just as good - or better - in other dining establishments.
Arby's
Arby's is known for its roast beef sandwiches. Despite its niche in the fast-food landscape, some foodies argue that their menu is too limited, and not everyone likes beef sandwiches. However, it might not be overrated at all, as one foodie says: "Who overrates Arby’s?? I hear nothing but crap talking." And I couldn't agree more. Personally, I do love a good Arby's sandwich, but I seem to be in the minority!
Applebee's
Applebee's is a casual dining chain offering a variety of dishes. Critical foodies say that the quality of the food does not measure up to comparable restaurants and assert that a lot of food is supposedly heated from frozen and not cooked to order. Now I don't know if that is true, but either way, if you want to have great food, a chain restaurant is probably not the best option, anyway!
