12 Brand Name Foods You Should Never Swap for Generic

    By Emmeline Kemperyd updated December 12, 2025 · Published December 31, 2025 · Leave a Comment

When it comes to grocery shopping, some brand name products stand out as truly worth their premium price. Be it due to overall quality and reliability, or just the fact that it tastes "right". We browsed a popular internet forum to find what brand name groceries foodies say are really worth their premium - and here is the result.

    Hellman's Mayo

One user commented, "Hellman's is the best! I've tried the store brand and Kraft, but it's garbage compared to Hellman's." I 100% agree! I would never buy another brand of mayonnaise - if they're out of Hellmann's, I'd rather spend the time making it myself than get another version.

    Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice

There's a reason people often say Ocean Spray when they talk about cranberry juice. The Massachusetts-based company basically has a monopoly, and rightly so! The tartness, color, and taste are just right, not to mention the load of antioxidants and vitamin C each drink provides.

    JIF Peanut Butter

JIF is the preferred peanut butter brand, and according to one nut-loving foodie, it is 100% worth the extra cost. Personally, I don't get just how different Jif can be from other peanut butter brands - but I'm also not a big consumer, so maybe I don't have a say. As long as it doesn't have added sugar I'm down with any brand!

    French's Fried Onions

Another foodie commented: "French's fried onions. There isn't a good substitute that's not homemade." Now I would never have thought fried onions would be one of the foods where the brand name is worth it, but I guess you learn something new every day! And now I definitely need to try French's supposedly amazing fried onions...

    Cheerios

You know a product is the real deal if there are other actual copycat products. Cheerios is one such cereal brand, but despite the many options out there - foodies say the brand name version is still worth the splurge. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

    Heinz Ketchup

One person crowned Heinz Ketchup as the best brand with no generic equivalents. And I can only agree! Generic brand versions are either overly sweet or just lack that special Heinz taste. Also, Heinz has made some of the best ads. Just Google 'Heinz ads' and block out the rest of your day!

    Kerry Gold Butter

One user shared: "Kerry Gold butter has absolutely no substitute." Made with milk from grass-fed cows, the Irish brand easily stands out in the dairy aisles with dozens of varieties. And here I thought that Guinness and Connor McGregor were the most outstanding things to come out of Ireland!

    Oreos

Although you can find knockoffs of Oreos in many grocery stores, there's nothing quite like the original. But as it turns out, Oreos aren't actually the original Oreos! Or, well, they ARE of course the original "Oreos", but the very similar Hydrox cookies came first. Still, for many, me included, Oreos are the one and only, and totally worth it compared to alternatives.

    Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce

Another person said that Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce has no match. I couldn't agree more - generic brands don't even come close to it. I don't know if it's the anchovies they're missing or what, but they just don't add that same round, spicy, flavor we expect.

    Philadelphia Cream Cheese

Philadelphia is the sure winner when it comes to cream cheese, and the generic versions just aren't as creamy and flavorful. They're fine - but it really is worth spending an extra buck on the brand name, if you can afford it. Especially if you're using it to top sandwiches, bagels, or cakes - if you're cooking with it, I say generic is fine.

    Nutella

One chocolate lover commented: "Nutella-no other hazelnut chocolate spread comes close." Did you know that in 2017, over 20 tons of Nutella were stolen from a lorry in a German town? If that doesn't prove that people are crazy about it, we don't know what will!

    Kraft Mac n Cheese

Another person added to the thread: "Kraft Mac and cheese or Kraft dinner to our northern cousins...Just can't do it. Don't know what they put in it, but nothing can replace it." [sic] While Kraft's version may be the best as far as store bought versions go, homemade mac and cheese is definitely even better!
