Love It or Hate It? Foodies Can Never Agree on These 12 Foods.

By Emmeline Kemperyd on November 3, 2024, updated October 30, 2024 - Leave a Comment

While foodies can all agree on the fact that they love good food, it seems much harder to agree on what "good food" actually means... The same ingredient can be considered insanely delicious by some, and utterly horrifying by others. So which foods are the most divisive? We scoured a popular internet forum to find out!

    Brussel Sprouts

Brussels sprouts are one of the most divisive veggies in the world. They sure aren’t everyone’s cup of tea! One person commented: “Brussel sprouts. Because of genetic mutations, approximately half the population finds them unpalatable. I'm one of them, never ate a brussel sprout I didn't want to spit out.” [sic]

Fun fact: Alongside oranges and lemons, Captain Cook also used brussels sprouts to protect his crew from the scurvy. If that's not enough to convince you sprout haters, I don't know what is!

    Mushrooms

One foodie says: “Mushrooms. I love and hate them. Cooked? Excellent addition to stir-fry, quiche, pizza, even good as a main dish. Raw or cooked badly? They taste like fluffy potting soil.”

The trick is not to wash them with water but to clean them with a dry cloth. That way, they don’t get all soggy and waterlogged! But I would also agree that they need to be cooked just right, and definitely cooked - who even likes RAW mushrooms?!

    Oysters

One person shared: “Oysters. My family is split 50/50 in loving them and absolutely despising them.” Maybe try telling the haters that oysters are actually considered an aphrodisiac, and see if their tune changes... And if not, just be happy there are more oysters for you!

    Marmite

This person shared: “Marmite - my partner likes it but I think it’s awful.” Another person commented: “This is the textbook answer! I mean they had a whole marketing campaign about how you either love it or hate it, and people describe individuals as Marmite meaning that.”

Look at you, Marmite, becoming the poster-boy for divisive foods. Now, that’s just genius marketing!

    Blue Cheese

When it comes to cheese, blue cheese is arguably the most divisive. For some strange reason, certain people just don’t seem to like it. One commonly cited reason is the smell. Meanwhile, others love it a bit too much. One user commented: “I try, but I just can't do it. I can't like it. I hear how my dad and brother sing their praises to it, but I can't even look at it.”

And if you want to ease into it - this blue cheese sauce can make anyone a blue cheese lover.

    Cookies with Frosting and Sprinkles

Who knew those cookies with frosting and sprinkles could be so contentious? As one comment thread on a public forum revealed, some people love them and find them utterly addictive. Even to the point that having one cookie will send them down a rabbit hole. While others think they’re bad, claiming they tasted dry and flavorless.

I remember loving these as a kid, but I haven't had one since, and I'm not sure I would find the sugary taste quite as appealing today...

    Egg Nog

Apparently, this festive drink is a big divider of taste buds – some love and enjoy it, while others avoid it like the plague. For the latter’s sake, it’s probably good that the beverage is only available during the holidays!

    Raisins

While you’ll see many people add raisins to their cookies, cakes, oatmeals, and yogurt, there is a fair amount of people that HATE the sight of this dried fruit. One user commented: “I love a good homemade chewy oatmeal raisin cookie, but a lot of people act like raisins are evil rabbit turds.” That’s one way to put it for sure!

My sister hates raisins so much that she won't even have cookies or bread where the raisins have been removed... claiming "it still tastes like raisins".

    Beets

The taste of this healthy root vegetable is compared to dirt by many people, including the ones who actually enjoy it! One person commented: “Ok I'm so relieved to hear that people who actually enjoy them all agree that they taste like absolute dirt! I keep telling people it's why I hate them; they taste like sweet dirt. Everyone always responds with "its earthy!!!" Yeah and earthy tastes like dirt and rocks!” [sic]

Well, I guess some people just enjoy the taste of dirt and rocks, and I am proud to be one of them!

    Dr. Pepper

One person shared their family’s stance on the soda: “In my family, there are two strongly divided camps when it comes to Dr. Pepper.” Imagine marrying into this family and having to pick sides based on soda!

    Spam

One person explained the conundrum hilariously in this love letter to this processed food: “Dear Spam, Why are you so good? How can you be so nauseating while at the same time being so satisfying? I could eat you by the brick. But please stay away from me, I'm not even Hawaiian.”

For those of you who are sure about your love affair with Spam, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s an entire festival dedicated to the meat called Spam Jam. Who's coming?!

    Candy Corn

This online user shared: “Absolutely love candy corn. My mom always gets it for me because she knows that me and her are the only two people who love it.” [sic] A vegetable disguised as candy… or wait, was it the other way around? Either way, sounds made to be divisive to me!
