This Sour Cream Sauce with Avocado & Lime is the perfect sauce for barbecues and especially any type of seafood dishes. Quick & easy to make this is an acidic sauce that's a great complement to flavorful dishes.

The Perfect Sauce for Seafood Barbecues

We've made this sauce in my family for years. It's delicious without an overpowering flavor, so it's great next to anything flavor-packed.

My favorite way to serve it is with grilled seafood like salmon or shrimp. That high acidity also makes it a great choice for anything strong in flavor or high in fat.

And if you have just one avocado but want it to serve a crowd? This sauce is the way to go.

It's also super quick to make and all done in just 5 minutes!

One Avocado Goes a Long Way

ingrredients for sour cream sauce with avocado and lime

One avocado goes a long way for this recipe, but make sure it's a really good one. It should be ripe and nice in order to add as much flavor as possible.

Sour cream is my favorite creamer for this recipe - but you can also use Greek yogurt or crème fraîche. If you want more acidity with those options, just add a bit more lime or lemon. Taste test and see what it needs!

How to Make It in Under 5 Minutes

    1. Smash & Season

Start by smashing the avocado with a fork, then season with lime juice, salt and pepper. You could make this in a food processor as well, but I prefer just using a fork for 2 reasons:

    1. Easier cleanup with just one bowl
    2. I like it a bit chunky

    2. Make It Creamy

Mix in sour cream, taste test, and adjust seasoning if needed. You might want to add more salt, pepper or lemon juice. Then cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes if you can.

    What to Do with Leftovers

Since this sauce contains avocado it's best eaten straight away, or after a short time of storing. However, there's so much acidity in the sauce it will be fine for a few days as well.

Storing: Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

    Freezing: Do not freeze leftovers.
