Why you will love this recipe

    • It's quick - two minutes, tops!
    • It's easy - just muddle, mix, and top with sprite
    • It uses simple ingredients - just grab a can of sprite, a lemon, some ice and some blue food coloring (or even skip it)
    • It's refreshing and well balanced in flavor - sweet, but with a hint of bitterness, and then a good dose of lemony acidity to balance it out
    • No special equipment needed - a muddler helps, but I'll share my trick for if you don't have one
    • Works for almost any theme party - just switch the blue food coloring for a color that works with your theme

What you need to make it

    Ingredient notes & substitutions

    • Blue food coloring can be skipped entirely or switched for another color. It can also be swapped for blue curaçao syrup, which makes it a bit sweeter. Use 1 teaspoon of the syrup for one mocktail.
    • Sprite can be switched for any lemon/lime soda or lemonade
    • Fresh lemon juice can be swapped for fresh lime juice

    How to make it

collagr showing the five steps to making a blue lagoon mocktail

    1. Place lemon rind & lemon juice in a glass
    2. Mash together using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, to release the bitter oils from the lemon rind
    3. Add blue food coloring and stir
    4. Add ice and fill up with sprite
    5. Decorate with a slice of lemon and a straw

    Tips & tricks

    • Use a potato peeler to peel the rind of the lemon (you can also use a small knife)
    • A muddler is great to have, but the handle of a wooden spoon works almost as well
    • Make it less bitter by using less lemon rind or skipping it entirely
    • Make it less sour by adding less lemon juice
    • Make a large batch for a crowd and serve in a pitcher or punch bowl
    • Change the color to match the theme of your party (why not make a green Grinch Punch for Christmas??)

    Recipe FAQ

Can I make this in advance?

You can make this halfway in advance. Muddle the lemon rind with lemon and add the blue food coloring. Then add ice and sprite just before serving.

What glass should I serve it in?

Traditionally, a Blue Lagoon is served in a highball glass, like the one I used for these pictures, so that's how I serve the mocktail version as well. It also looks very good in a hurricane glass.

What is Blue Lagoon Mocktail made of?

This version is made from lemon juice, a bit of lemon rind, Sprite, and blue food coloring.

What does the Blue Lagoon Mocktail taste like?

It's sweet and sour, with lots of citrus flavor and a slight bitter touch from the lemon rind. It's utterly refreshing, and delicious!

Can I use lemonade instead of Sprite? Does lemonade, lemon juice, and a lemon flavored energy drink go together for this drink?

Hi Leonard! I haven't tried it with lemonade myself, but it sounds like it would work. I'd add some sparkling water too to still get the bubbles (or a carbonated lemon flavored energy drink :)). As for an energy drink, just make sure it doesn't have too much of a strange aftertaste - in my experience some of them tend to have this. Let me know how it turns out!
