Foodies say These 12 Ingredients Will Ruin Any Dish

By Emmeline Kemperyd on April 3, 2024, updated April 2, 2024 - Leave a Comment

Ingredients can make the dish, or they can absolutely destroy it. And sometimes, it only takes one ingredient to ruin your favorite dish. For example, pineapples on pizza. Yep, we went there! So in this collection, we’ll be exploring the top ingredients foodies believe shouldn’t be used in cooking, all according to a discussion on a popular internet forum. Some are common, others very debated, and there's at least one ingredient on this list that I would prefer to have in ALL food!

    Cilantro

Let's start with the obvious one, the herb that divides the world: cilantro. One foodie shared their resentment: “I am one of the unlucky few that cannot eat Cilantro because to me it tastes the way that a dead fish tank smells. People won't believe me (my parents, my fiancée when we first started dating) and try to slip it into dishes to show me I'm just being picky, but I can always tell because it just tastes awful to me. I wish it didn't.”

Wow, "dead fish tank" does not sound tasty at all! I've heard people describe the taste as soap, which in comparison sounds utterly delicious.

    Artificial Sweeteners

Another foodie commented: “Not necessarily food but stevia leaf or most artificial sweetener, I can always tell when they add that garbage.” I am team "no stevia" all day! That weird, almost metallic, aftertaste just does not work for me. If it's gonna be sweet - why not just add sugar instead?

    Raisins

Many people simply don’t like raisins in any food. From bread to cookies to rice, these folks won’t touch any dish with raisins. They’d much prefer to go through the painstaking task of picking them out. There are a few reasons for not liking raisins: the overly sweet taste, the chewiness, or their wrinkled texture. Whatever it is, a lot of foodies avoid raisins like the plague. While I love raisins in everything from granola to baked goods, my sister won't even eat bread after the raisins have been removed...

    Cloves

One foodie shared their feelings about this fragrant spice: “Clove. It's way too harsh and overpowers everything.” Can't say I agree, as long as you don't bite into one! That will ruin the taste of a dish for sure.

    Fruits or Berries in Salad

Another foodies shared: “Fruit or berries in salads. I can't do it. I like my savory separate from my sweet.” I know this is a common opinion, but I just don't get it. Everything savory is better with a touch of sweet, and everything sweet is better with a touch of salt or savory. And that's just a fact! (Or at least my firm opinion)

    Blue Cheese

A former McDonald’s worker shared an interesting story, “McDonald’s once had a sandwich that had blue cheese in it, and this happened while I was working there as a young teen." He goes on to explain that lots of customers lost it, when they realized there was blue cheese on their sandwich. And one guy apparently even threw his sandwich at an employee because of it!

Blue cheese is a bit like marmite. You either hate it or you love it!

    Garlic and Onions

Many people don’t like garlic and onion in their food. I get it, they can quickly become the dominant flavor, but used in the right amount I think they are great. I wouldn't mind skipping that garlic / onion breath, though...

    Corn

One corn-loathing user commented: “I like corn, but keep it out of my clam chowder, keep it out of my chicken soup, keep it out of my beef stew.” Well, I think corn should be kept on the cob, but that's just me!

    Wasabi

A person shared their wasabi plight: “Wasabi or horseradish. Not the spiciness, the taste itself. If it even slightly touches some of my food I will taste it and gag immediately.” Now here's something I can agree with. I love sushi, I love spicy food, but wasabi? No way!

    Nutmeg

This foodie said their worst ingredient is “Nutmeg. You can put a speck of nutmeg in a gallon of food and the flavor will burst through like the kool-aid man.” They’re not wrong – nutmeg is a prime example of how adding a little more can be heaps more and ruin the dish entirely. But just a tiny bit? That's the secret to the best mashed potatoes right there!

    Palm Oil

Some people also avoid ingredients for ethical reasons. One user shared, “Palm oil is a biggie, it's bad for the environment and your stomach.” Did you know palm oil cultivation is responsible for deforestation in several countries? If you didn’t like the taste before, we bet you definitely don’t like it now!

    Mayonnaise

One person commented with no holds barred, “Mayonnaise, instant vomit for me.” They should see that scene from The Office where Michael eats spoonfuls of mayo directly from the jar. Instant cringe!

Now I can agree when it comes to store-bought mayonnaise, but sounds like this person has never had a good, homemade, mayonnaise before. That's something else, entirely!
