What is Dirt Pie?
Dirt pie, which is also known as mud pie, is an easy dessert that uses Oreo cookies crumbled up to resemble dirt.
Oreo dirt pie is typically made with a cookie crust, which is then filled with instant pudding and cream cheese (or whipped cream) mixture to resemble mud. More Oreo cookies are then crumbled on top as the "dirt", and that's it!
If making this recipe for kids, some people will even weave gummy worms into or on top of the mixture for a fun Oreo dirt dessert.

Ingredient notes & substitutions
- Chocolate pudding mix: Check the ratio of pudding mix vs milk, and make sure to use what's called for there. This recipe includes a suggestion but the exact ratio will vary with the brand you use. Also, make sure to use instant pudding mix as the regular one won't set properly.
- Oreos: to decorate, use mini Oreo, or crush up larger ones and sprinkle on top
- Salted butter: you can also use unsalted and add a pinch of salt

Tips & tricks
- Allow the chocolate pudding to start to set before mixing in the cream cheese and whipped cream
- No food processor? Place the Oreos in a plastic bag, seal it, and use a rolling pin to crush them.

Storage instructions
Store leftovers in the pie plate itself, covered with cling wrap or aluminium foil, and in the fridge. Stored like this, it will last for up to four days. Or, portion it into individual containers before serving. Keep in mind, the crust will soften a bit as it sits, as will any Oreos you've used to decorate it with.
Do not freeze the Oreo dirt pie, as it will not thaw well.
You can make this recipe the day before, and it will be just as good. Wait to decorate until just before serving tough, so the cookies on top don't get soggy.
How to decorate it
Decorate the mud pie recipe depending on what you need it for! A few of my favorites are:
- Adding flowers on top for spring gatherings or bridal showers
- Weaving in gummy worms, candy eyes, or candy bones for Halloween
- Topping it with mini Oreo cookies and powdered sugar for a classic look for birthdays
- Crushing Oreos on top or using chocolate sprinkles for a more "dirt" feel
- Adding peep bunnies on top for Easter
- Portioning out dollops of cool whip over it
Recipe FAQ
Oreo pie uses a cookie crumb crust made from crushed Oreos. The crust is then filled with a blend of instant pudding mix and either cream cheese for a thick and rich filling or whipped topping for a lighter filling - or a combination of both. Finally, it is topped with more Oreo crumbs for a "dirt" look. It's an easy dessert recipe, and if you purchase the cookie crust it can even become a no-bake dessert.
You only need two ingredients to make Oreo crust: crushed Oreo cookies and melted butter. The better crushed the cookies are, the better the crust will hold together once baked.
You can crush Oreos easily enough by pulsing them in a food processor. However, if you don't have a food processor, place the Oreo cookies in a large plastic baggie. Then, use a rolling pin to gently crush the Oreo cookies as finely as you want.
