Make homemade Air Fryer Tortilla Chips in under 10 minutes - and forget all about the store bought kind. With just a little bit of oil and a sprinkle of salt, they come out crispy and golden - and perfect for all your dipping needs.
Ask anyone who's ever lived with me for more than a few days - my favorite dish is nachos & salsa. It's always on my shopping list. And I get stressed if I don't have it at home.
So, of course, the first thing I ever made in my air fryer was - tortilla chips. And they're so good, now I don't even want to buy them anymore.
Why you will love this recipe
- It's quick - all done in under 15 minutes, including frying in two batches
- It's easy - just season, cut, and air fry
- It's better than store bought - you won't want to buy tortilla chips ever again
- They're healthier than regular tortilla chips since the air fryer allows any excess oil to run off
- Perfect for dipping - or just eat them as they are, they're THAT good!
What you need to make them
Ingredient notes & substitutions
- Corn tortillas - I use medium-sized tortillas
- Vegetable oil - I use rapeseed oil, but any neutral vegetable oil works
- Seasonings can be added as desired - how about some paprika powder, chipotle powder, or maybe even some ranch seasoning or nutritional yeast?
How to make them
First, I recommend preheating your air fryer. Do this by running it for 5 minutes at your target temperature - in this case, 300°F (150°C). If you're unsure if you are supposed to preheat the specific air fryer you have, check out the manual first.
- Start by brushing your tortillas with vegetable oil on all sides
- Sprinkle with salt - try to spread it out as evenly as possible
- Place the tortillas on top of each other and cut down the middle
- Place the halves on top of each other, and, once again, slice down the middle
- Now place the quarters on top of each other, and slice down the middle again
- Place the tortilla pieces in a single layer in your air fryer basket and air fry for 3 minutes at 300°F (150°C). Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might need to fry them in batches.
- Remove the basket and turn the tortilla chips, then air fry again for 3 minutes at 300°F (150°C)
- Remove from the air fryer and place on a kitchen towel to crisp up. Let them rest for at least 5 minutes before eating.
Tips & tricks
- Fry in one layer only to make sure your chips come out crispy
- Change up the seasonings and add any flavor you like - either sprinkle it on after the oil, or mix in with the oil
- Don't cook them too long - they will crisp up when they rest, so they will not be crispy when you first bring them out from the air fryer
- Store in a plastic bag in room temperature - they are good for up to 5 days
- Make them ahead of time - they are just as good on the second and third day
Recipe FAQ
Too long/short cook time: Cook time will vary with the model and brand of your air fryer. If they came out too brown, or not crispy, try adjusting the time up or down.
Overcrowding: you might have overcrowded the basket - make sure you cook them in one layer.
No oil: You need a bit of oil to make them golden and crispy instead of brown.
Too high temperature: If they come out brown rather than golden, try adjusting the temperature down a bit.
You can, but the result will vary depending on the ingredients. Try your favorite brand, and see!
You can, but your chips will be a bit more chewy and not as crispy. Still delicious!
