Are postickers, dumplings and gyoza all the same?
The short answer is: no, but also yes. Actually, both potstickers and gyoza are dumplings - and they are both similar, but not the same.
Dumpling is a broad, general name for dough wrapped around a filling, which is then steamed or fried.
Potstickers are both steamed and fried, so they're crispy on the bottom.
Gyoza are the Japanese version of potstickers, but are often made with a thinner dough layer.
How to make them
- Preheat your air fryer by running it at 350°F (180°C) for 5 minutes, then bring out the air fryer basket and brush lightly with vegetable oil
- Spread out the dumplings in a single layer, leaving room for the air to circulate. Air fry for 2-4 minutes at 350°F (180°C).
- Flip the dumplings, then air fry 2-4 minutes more
- All done, serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce!
Tips & tricks
- Preheat the air fryer to shorten cook time, and get the most even result
- No need to thaw frozen dumplings - you can cook them straight from frozen
- Air fry in a single layer for an even cook. If making more dumplings, cook them in batches.
- Flip them halfway for an even cook
- Cook time will vary with the size of your dumplings and your air fryer model. You can always add a few more minutes.
- Pre-packaged frozen food should always be cooked to 165°F (74°C) - use a meat thermometer to be sure
- Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days, but remember they are best eaten straight away
- Reheat dumplings by air frying for 2 minutes at 350°F (180°C), flipping them every minute
Recipe FAQ
Yes, that's a great idea! Air fry dumplings at 350°F (180°C) for 6-8 minutes, then check to make sure they are heated through. If not, add 2 more minutes.
In general you need 6-8 minutes for frozen pot stickers, dumplings and gyoza, and 4-5 minutes if they are fresh or thawed. However, cook time will vary with the size of the dumplings and your air fryer model.
The short answer: air fry them! Air frying is great for crisping up potstickers and dumplings. Add a small bit of oil to the air fryer for extra crisp.
