I'm a big fan of halloumi, and use it in all kinds of ways: grilled on skewers with veggies, in stir-fries, in curries, and in halloumi wraps.

But the way I have it most often? Air fried, with a squeeze of lemon, and maybe some chili flakes or Tajin seasoning.

Why you will love this recipe

    • It's quick and done in under 10 minutes
    • No mess - keep it all in the air fryer
    • No oil needed for a less greasy treat
    • The crispiest halloumi thanks to getting rid of all the excess liquid
    • Perfectly golden brown thanks to the circulating air
    • Hands off - slice it, then let the air fryer do the work!
    • 1 ingredient - a package of halloumi cheese is all you need!

What you need to make it

    A package of halloumi.

How to make Air Fryer Halloumi

Collage showing halloumi slices in air fryer before and after air frying.
    1. Place sliced halloumi in a cold (not preheated) air fryer basket
    2. Air fry 8-10 minutes at 390°F (200°C), until crispy and golden

    Tips & tricks

    • Cook in a single layer or the slices will stick together
    • Leave enough space around the slices for the air to circulate
    • Don't preheat! Halloumi cooks better from cold.
    • Don't flip! It cooks better when you leave it alone.
    • Don't add oil! It crisps up even better on its own.
    • Cook time can vary with your specific air fryer model

    Storing, Freezing & Reheating

Storing: Store leftover air fryer halloumi in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Eat leftover halloumi cold or reheat in the air fryer.

    Freezing: Do not freeze leftovers.

Reheating: Brush lightly with olive oil or spray with cooking spray, then reheat in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes at 390°F (200°C).

    Recipe FAQ

How do you make halloumi without it going rubbery?

Halloumi can get a rubbery texture when you cook it too long. To avoid this, cook it over pretty high temperature to allow the interior to soften, while the outside turns crispy and golden.

Should you wash halloumi before cooking?

No, I do not recommend washing halloumi before cooking. Some people like doing this to remove excess salt, but to me the saltiness of halloumi is one of the best parts about it.

Is it better to bake or fry halloumi?

I prefer frying (pan frying or air frying) halloumi over baking it. The reason is that this gives it a better, crispier, exterior.

    Serving suggestions

Air fried halloumi is delicious as a snack or appetizer on its own, but there are also lots of delicious halloumi recipes you can try:

    • Halloumi Wraps
    • Halloumi Portobello Burgers
    • Halloumi Sandwich

    • With a side of cherry tomatoes and a sprinkle of sea salt flakes and fresh ground black pepper
