If you have frozen sausages, don't worry about thawing them - cook them straight from frozen in your air fryer instead! It requires minimal prep & just 12-14 minutes of cooking. They come out juicy, tender and cooked to perfection, and all ready to serve with your favorite sauces and sides!
A Great Frozen Food to Keep on Hand
Frozen sausages are great to have in the freezer for whenever the mood strikes. I sometimes get serious cravings for hot dogs or sausages - but not often enough that I'm going to finish a pack before they go bad in the fridge.
If I'm cooking them on the grill or pan frying them I find they cook best from already thawed. But who has time for that, once the cravings strike?! That's why I love cooking them in the air fryer. They cook great, straight from frozen, for an even quicker meal.
I love eating them with fries or mashed potatoes (instant mashed potatoes even, for the easiest meal!) and a side of ketchup or barbecue sauce.
Or I make a classic Swedish "flatbread roll" ("tunnbrödsrulle") where a very thin kind of flatbread is rolled around sausages, mashed potatoes, salad and some ketchup. If you have the chance - definitely try it out!
Just Pop Them in the Air Fryer, and Cook!
- You don't even need to preheat the air fryer. Just place the sausages in a cold basket and set to cook for 12-14 minutes at 390°F (200°C) (thin sausages) or 360°F (180°C) (thicker sausages).
- I recommend flipping them halfway. Then, when the time is up, Check to make sure they are cooked through (the internal temperature should be at least 165°F (74°C)), then devour!
Tips & Tricks for Best Results
- If your air fryer is prone to producing a lot of smoke, or if you start to see smoke coming out of the air fryer, just add some water to the bottom of the air fryer basket. When all that fat drips of the sausages it can burn in the bottom of the air fryer, which creates all that smoke. I often add a bit of water before cooking as a preventative measure before cooking.
- If your sausages are frozen together, air fry them together for 2-3 minutes, then separate them and continue cooking.
- Use a meat thermometer to make sure they are done. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C) before consuming.
- Adjust the temperature depending on the thickness of the sausages to make sure they are cooked through but not burnt. I recommend 390°F (200°C) for thinner and 360°F (180°C) for thicker sausages.
What Kind of Sausages Should You Use?
This recipe works for any type of sausage! The only difference will be the temperature and cook time - thinner sausages will cook quicker at a higher temperature, and thicker sausages take a bit longer and are cooked at a lower temperature for that reason.
I do have a specific post for frozen hot dogs. The method is still the same, they just cook a bit faster!
Do You Need to Pierce the Skin?
No, it's better not to! If you pierce the skin you risk losing moisture and the sausages won't come out as juicy.
Storing, Freezing & Reheating Instructions
Sausages are best eaten straight away, so I recommend trying not to air fry more than you will finish. If you do have leftovers anyway, you can store them as well.
Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
I do not recommend freezing leftovers.
Leftovers are best cut into bite-size pieces and pan-seared. You can fry some potatoes or vegetables with them to make it a meal!
Reheat leftovers in the air fryer - either whole a few minutes at 360°F (180°C), or (better) cut into bite-size pieces.
