I always have frozen veggies in my freezer - it's such an easy way to add veggies to your dinner. I used to boil them, steam them or heat them in the microwave - but just as for French fries and sweet potato fries, since I discovered the air fryer, this is the only way I will make them!
While fresh vegetables are amazing (I love Air Fryer Bell Peppers!), I often forget about them and they end up going bad. But with frozen veggies, no such bad luck!
Why you will love this recipe
- It's the best way for cooking frozen vegetables
- Quicker than other cooking methods
- "Steamed" or roasted veggies - you choose, I'll teach you both methods!
- Easy to get a nice crisp that's difficult with other cooking methods
- Super easy and done in a few minutes depending on which veggie you choose!
- A healthy side dish for any main dish!
What you need to make them
Ingredient notes & substitutions
To make frozen veggies in your air fryer you really only need 1 thing: frozen veggies. This is entirely sufficient to get a great tasting vegetable on the table. Choose your favorite veggies, and get cooking!
To add flavor and improve the results further I also recommend:
- A little bit of olive oil: for flavor and improved exterior texture of the veggies. You can also use a different type of oil, or swap it for oil spray or cooking spray.
- Salt because all veggies are better with a touch of salt
- Pepper can be added for extra flavor
For added flavor you can also add different specific seasonings. What seasoning works best depends on the type of vegetable. Green Beans are amazing with just some sea salt flakes while Cauliflower, Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts really shine with some added spices.
How to make them
- Start by pouring the olive oil over the veggies
- Mix well and try to get the oil evenly distributed all over the veggies
- Add salt and any other seasonings
- Mix well once again
- Place in a pre heated air fryer basket and air fry at 390°F (200°C). The time will depend on which veggies you use - from just a couple of minutes for green beans to 6-10 minutes for broccoli and cauliflower. Either way, shake them once about halfway.
- If you like the veggies closer to steamed, that's all you need to do. The veggies will come out soft, juicy & delicious!
- To roast the veggies, you need to remove the water that will drip down through the air fryer basket as the veggies thaw. Pour it out halfway, then air fry until the veggies are nice and roasted.
Tips & tricks
- Mix up the seasonings and find your favorites - matching them with the flavors of the rest of your meal is always a safe bet!
- Maximize flavor by seasoning halfway - but if you're lazy, like me, it's fine to do it already at the beginning
- Preheat the air fryer for the very best results
- Don't defrost the veggies, cook them straight from frozen
- Don't overcrowd your air fryer basket - it's fine to have multiple layers, but make sure to leave some room for the hot air to circulate. And keep in mind that the fuller the basket, the longer it will take.
- For well roasted veggies - cook in a single layer
- Shake the veggies around halfway for an even cook
- Adjust cook time depending on the vegetable - this can vary a lot! From just a few minutes for Green Beans to up to 10 minutes for larger veggies.
- Use a thermometer to make sure the veggies are done - frozen food should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (73°C) (USDA)
- Cook time can vary with different air fryers
- Store any leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days
